Borderlands Game Of The Year App Reviews

A Great Game, But Requires a Powerful Mac

If you love loot-based games such as Diablo and World of Warcraft and if you like FPS like Call of Duty, this is a game youll probably fall in love with. I played over 120 hours on the Xbox 360 and the Mac port seems excellent so far after a few hours of play. On my mid-2010 Core i7 MacBook Pro with 4GB of RAM, the framerate isnt perfect at 1280x800, but it still plays great. The game was designed for consoles and the UI shows, but overall Feral has done a good job of porting the PC game. With all 4 add-ons that come bundled in this app, its a great value. You can, and probably will, play this for 30-40 hours if not more. Highly replayable and a ton of fun.

My Impressions of the Port

First of all, be warned that this port doesnt run as a single app. When you click to open it, it launches two disks on your desktop to run the game off of. I found that quiet annoying and somewhat of a time consuming eye soar. Secondly, for being a mac port thats downloaded off the Mac App Store.. it doesnt run very well. I have a mid 2010 macbook pro and everything has to be set to medium setting the dynamic shadowing off. Even then it doesnt seem all that impressive framerate wise. The most annoying thing about this game is getting into an online game. To do so, you have to download a seperate application called "Gameranger" and actually choose a server off if it! Then you have to watch the game start up all over again and load through everything you just sat though. Not the best port. Apple should patch this up, make the online servers available from in game, and get rid of those annoying icons off my desktop.

Lazy

Feral Interactive should be ashamed of the product they have put forward. I completely agree with Brandon. Their port is lazy and hampers performance even on top of the line macs. i was having download issues, save issues and now the game wont even run. please patch this asap. you are ruining an amazing game, and please do not stop at one patch, continue to master your craft, this port in amature at best. do not buy, until it is at least 2-3 patches in.

Hours Upon Hours of Bloody Fun, Few Caveats

Besides being addictively fun, Ferals port runs at a very good framerate on my MacBook Pro (GeForce 330M) at medium settings. I have no doubt that maxing the graphics out will bring even a top-of-the-line Mac to its knees, but setting the bar a bit lower didnt detract from my fun at all. I initially had an issue where the game refused to launch, but it was solved by re-downloading the game from the App Store. (Corrupt download, perhaps?) Highly recommended.

Its Good.

Have been playing the game for about 3 days now, and I am thrilled with it. Great game, great concept. It did take me a while to get into the game, somewhat of a slow start–for me anyways. The game itself is similar to Fallout except, as one game review puts it, "in reverse". I have been playing this on a MacBook Pro, 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB memory. And, it works great. So, it does not NECESSARILY "require a powerful mac". I have noticed some lag, but I had music running. Oh, and I have been running the game at full resolution and colour and all that stuff. Graphics: AMAZING, really enjoy the cartoonish look along with the realistic back drops. Speed: Runs quick, some lag, depends on your computer and what else you have running. Story: I like the story, interesting concept, very fun to play-along. Saving: Does it in the background, works well, no issues. Buttons: Can be adjusted to your preferences. Mouse: Can be played with trackpad, somewhat difficult. Sound: Sound quality is wonderful and Right & Left enabled (meaning noises will be heard in the L/R ear depending on where the sounds come from). Problems: Nothing yet, a bit of lag, but that is to be expected. However, in the game itself: I notice the gun shots miss 30% of the time even when the crosshair is directly lying on the target. So I found that a little strange, perhaps it is a Life-Like thing they were trying for. Final Decision: Decided on 4 stars instead of 5, only because the game started a little slow and I had a few higher expectations for the game considering the price ($49.99) which is a little high for an App such as this.

Probably fun, req. specs misleading.

Ive been wanting to play this game for a while, and when I saw there was a Mac port I was delighted. Upon purchase of this game I can say that trying to run it on a 2010 MacBook Pro was a mistake, I should have heeded warnings from other reviews. Having to turn the graphics down so low it looks like a game from 1995 ruins the experience for me. Other games dont seem to suffer this hard on my MBP. I wouldnt recommend buying unless youve got a higher-end model.

Runs well on MacBook Air (October 2010)

I love this game. Lots of things to do if you like the cross between RPG and FPS. Im running on a Macbook Air (Oct 2010 Model, 13", 4GB RAM, 2.1GHZ CPU) and while the CPU maxes out as soon as you start the program you get a fairly smooth frame rate with the graphics turned down to medium at the full 1440x900 resolution. Granted, its not full quality in all its glory, but I didnt expect that from my MacBook Air (Im actually quite pleased with the full screen resolution) and the gameplay is quite fun and engaging with a quirky sense of humour - and that to me is the most important thing. Overall, Id highly recommend this game.

iMac is no PC

I hate pc, but I gotta say, my 2010 iMac 27" computer cant really handle this game. I mean, I dont expect much in the way of gaming on a mac, but when I pay 2000$ I expect something worth my money. Good game, but play it on pc...

Playable ?

I dont know if i would say this app was worth the price, it is a great game, but not this port for MAC, im running this game on medium and get around 22 FPS which is playable, but if u take the same PC version throw it on BOOTCAMP or believe it or not even parallels, you can increase the graphics, leave Bloom and Shawdows off, and u can get a solid 30 FPS. Which tells me its just a poor port. Come on guys patch it ! .. i wana play this thing Natively in OSX, with a better Frame Rate.

So far so good

This game is great! A nice departure from the average FPS. The RPG elements really add some depth, but they dont get in the way of the action. When I was considering whether to buy it, I had some reservations since it looked to be a pretty demanding game graphics-wise. But it plays very well on my imac (granted, Im not that deep into the game yet). Im running it on an i3, 512 vram, 4 gb ram, and it looks great. The only thing is it defaults down to 1280x720, with all graphic settings maxed. I tried it at 1920 x 1080 and found that the fps suffered even with the settings scaled back. The thing is Borderlands is still very playable at lower res! Theres something about the graphic style that just works. Some other games Ive played on my imac just dont feel right when I lower the res. Dragon Age Origins for instance really starts to feel claustrophobic, and the performance improvments are negligible at 1280x720. All in all, if you cant stand to play games in anything less than native resolution, then maybe think twice. Otherwise go for it and enjoy! Very original game!

Whats all the whining about?

I have been playing Borderlands on my Macbook AIR 2 13" for the last few days and I dont mind dialing down the settings. The gameplay is rich, the adventure is quite fun with varied side missions. Im having a blast! I hate First Person Shooters but this one I can honestly say I really enjoy Balanced leveling and solid combat with great humor and lots to do. I dont need high graphics to enjoy the game. I have no lag and no problems. A little slow on the initial load-up but it plays great. I cant believe I waited so long to buy this game.

Great game, but download does not work

Ive played this game on xbox, and it is one of my favorites. Its kind of like diablo, with its loot based system. The story is below average, and the ending is bad, but it is still very fun to play. The 4 addons in the GOTY edition make up for it. The download for this seems to be broken. Everytime it gets to around 900 mbs, it says error occured, so its unplayable for me.

Buggy? I

This app fails to install for me. If you just let the Apple App Store handle it like youre supposed to, it does the entire 10GB install, then simply says that its failed to install and that it couldnt extract files from the .pkg file. It then offers to cancel or retry. If you retry (or cancel and later try to use the install button again), it re-downloads the entire 10GB only to throw the same error. Lather, rinse, repeat. I tried manually copying the App Store cache folder before it erased the installer and then launching the .pkg file itself. It says, "Writing files...." for a minute or so, then fails out with a generic "Something went wrong," type of error. Ill update the review if Ferals support manages to resolve the issue, but for the time being I cant recommend the app whatsoever, especially if your ISP has any kind of cap on your downloads. (I used up 30GB of data transfer just allowing it to retry a couple of times. Fortuantely, my cap is very high.) This is on a Mid-2011 Thunderbold iMac Quad-Core G7.

Great game, not maxed out though

Its a really fun game, and it works fine on my 27" iMac with ATI RADEON HD 4850 512 MB, but my graphics arent maxed out. I can play on 2560x1440 resolution, but the frame per seconds is greatly affected. So im currently playing on 1920x1080 resolution and its ok. Great gameplay too !

download problem

each time i finish download at the point of 6GB it will stop, and when i start it again, it will redownload it, i just dont get it, it is a weast of time, that weasted the whold day, hope they can fix it.

A very fun game

Borderlands is a very fun shooter. If you are playing solo, it does get repetative. I love the comedy: the game does not take itself seriously which adds to the enjoyment. Graphics are great, game is as advertized. It won the Game of The Year a couple of years ago. And every single DLC is included in the game. A $50 savings over the ful regular price the PC people paid. My only peeve with it is that the field of view is not widescreen even though the game gives you widescreen options: it does take a bit of getting used to.

Outstanding!

Ive been gaming for decades now and this is by far one of the MOST FUN games Ive ever played. A more powerful computer is better, but even on a basic machine its still heaps of fun to play if you dont mind the lower resolution. The graphics are setup like a comic book so it looks cool any way you play it. Ive never played a more replayable game ever. 4 full playthroughs and going strong. Being able to change your characters details a lot and endless types of weapons make this continually exciting. I must have played 300 + hours so far. 4 player co-op mode is awesome! This game is best played with at least 1 friend on co-op. It changes the experience immensly!

Cl4p your hands

A great port to a great game, bought it twice with no regrets. Runs perfect on max settings with 8GB memory. Also you should know that most ports need more RAM in order to play.

Runs well but pricy

Great game, port runs poor compared to Windows though. I can run full tilt in bootcamp and never drop below 60fps. In OSX, Im lucky to get 30 consistant, with half the display options turned off (e.g. Bloom). This is on an 8core Mac Pro with ATI 6870. VSYNC is not available even after editing the config file, and the tearing is atrocious.

Borderlands

This is GR8 it is interesting fun and action packed. I love it.
